Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a structural treatment using techniques that mobilise your joints and release restrictions in your fascia, muscles and ligaments. Osteopathic Practitioners use many gentle techniques and are a safe choice for all ages and stages – from newborns to the elderly. These techniques reduce pain, help with alignment and mobility and decompress blood vessels and nerves. With better circulation comes more efficient healing.

OMT Techniques:

  • Myofascial techniques release your muscles and fascia. Fascial techniques can work the restriction directly, or more gentle indirect techniques follow your tissues and wait for a release.

  • Strain/Counterstrain and Functional techniques follow your body into the “ease” and wait for your tissues and joints to release.

  • Muscle energy techniques are direct techniques using your own muscle resistance to mobilise a joint.

  • Joint mobilisations and manipulations are small, direct corrections of joint restrictions to improve mobility.

Gentle techniques are often just as effective as forceful ones in restoring mobility because your body is relaxed and open to letting go. You may feel a more vigorous treatment is appropriate for your tissues’ needs – if so, communicate this to your therapist. Sometimes more depth can be achieved, not by sheer force or more pressure, but by finesse of technique and presence.
